Marvel Studios has long made it clear that their planned Disney Plus shows will have a large amount of overlap with future movies. For example, we already know that 2021’s WandaVision will connect directly to the subsequent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. What’s more, according to a new report from FandomWire, the upcoming Loki spinoff series will set up a fan-pleasing development in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. And if all we’re hearing is true, then be warned that some potential spoilers lie ahead.
Will Loki be in Thor: Love and Thunder
Loki reunites with the God of Thunder in a new fan-made poster for Thor: Love & Thunder. Before Thanos came and snapped away half of all living things, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was set up as the big bad in the MCU. Thor's adopted brother made his first appearance in Thor in 2011 before taking on all of the Avengers in 2012. The God of Mischief has appeared in several of the MCU movies, but the original Loki was strangled to death by Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War.As mentioned above, the Thor franchise began in 2011 and is set to continue in 2022 with Thor: Love & Thunder, making Thor the first MCU hero to get a fourth solo film. Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok restored people's faith in the Thor series, which is likely why he is returning to helm his next solo film. Not much is known about the story for Thor: Love & Thunder, but there are some big names coming back for the sequel. Natalie Portman is returning as Jane Foster and will become Mighty Thor, as is Tessa Thompson, who played Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. The Guardians of the Galaxy will also appear in Thor: Love & Thunder, but it's unknown what their role will be or how long they will be featured in the movie. One character that isn't expected to return, though, is Loki.
As you’ll likely recall, the recent Avengers: Endgame saw an alternate timeline version of Loki escape capture with the Tesseract. Since then, we’ve heard that the trickster’s TV show will be a continuation of this plot thread, as Loki uses the power of the Infinity Stone to travel through human history and change major events.
So far, the details of his small screen adventure are still a little vague, but at the end of the series, it’s said that Loki will use the Tesseract to travel into the main MCU timeline. This ending will apparently lay the groundwork for his appearance in the fourth Thor movie.
What’s interesting about this idea is that it potentially allows for the return of the old, relatively villainous Loki. After all, the alternate timeline version of Thor’s brother never had the redemptive arc of his main timeline counterpart. Speculation aside, however, we’ll find out what Marvel really has in mind for the trickster when the Loki show comes to Disney Plus in the Spring of 2021. After that, we’ll see how Jane Foster fares as the new Goddess of Thunder when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on November 5th of the same year.
Thor is doing what no other MCU hero has done: he's returning for a fourth solo outing in the eagerly-awaited Thor: Love and Thunder. We don't know too much about what Taika Waititi will deliver in the Ragnarok follow-up, other than it'll feature Natalie Portman's return (as "female Thor" no less) and that Waititi is "doubling down on how nuts Ragnarok was". There's been no mention of the movie featuring Tom Hiddleston as Loki, which is unsurprising considering Loki died in Avengers: Infinity War. And yet, what would a Thor movie be without Loki? As a result, a new Marvel theory on Reddit has suggested that Loki does have a major role to play in Thor: Love and Thunder – although it won't be the redeemed Loki we last saw in the MCU.
While Loki did "die" in Avengers: Infinity War, Loki from an alternate timeline escaped during the Time Heist in Avengers: Endgame, which leaves the door open for his return to the MCU. Loki is one of the few Marvel characters getting their own Disney+ TV show, but fans will have to wait until 2021 to see Loki. Depending on what happens during the events of his solo show, Loki could appear in Thor: Love & Thunder, but his appearance has by no means been confirmed.
Loki has "died" and come back to life a few different times during the events of the MCU, but having him return in Thor: Love & Thunder could give the MCU an interesting plotline. It would give Thor a chance to reunite with his brother; however, Loki would likely be a bad guy in the sequel. When he escaped with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame, it was the version from 2012 that had just tried taking over the world. That means if the teaser footage for Loki is anything to go by, he's going to be back to his ruthless self should he appear in Thor: Love & Thunder.
he rest of the theory does stray into speculative fan fiction, rather than base itself on what has been established in the MCU. However, the setup of it with the alternate timeline Loki is very plausible. As fun as it will be to just see Loki do his villainous thing in his series, it doesn't make sense that it would be completely standalone to the rest of the MCU's Phase 4. With the Disney+ shows and movies interconnecting in a way that Marvel never has before with its TV shows, it wouldn't be a surprise if the events of Loki set up Thor: Love and Thunder in some way. Thor might not have seen the end of his brother yet.
