Who will play Thor in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder movie

Chris Hemsworth Is ‘Definitely Not’ Saying Goodbye to Marvel After ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. Chris Hemsworth will play Thor again after Thor: Love and Thunder. Here are some MCU movies that he could appear in, from Avengers 5 to Thor 5.
In a new interview with the Polish magazine Elle Man, the Marvel superstar says he doesn’t plan to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after “Thor: Love and Thunder,” the fourth entry in the “Thor” series. When asked if Thor would retire after the upcoming movie, Hemsworth asserted that it wouldn’t be the end for his character. “Are you crazy?! I’m not going into any retirement period. Thor is far too young for that. He’s only 1,500 years old,” he said. “It’s definitely not a film that I say goodbye to this brand. At least I hope so.”

Chris Hemsworth will play Thor again after Thor: Love and Thunder, and here are some Marvel movies he could appear in. As one of the original members of the Avengers, it appeared Thor's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was coming to a close just a few years ago. Neither of his solo films was a huge hit and Hemsworth was starting to become bored with the character. But, the god of thunder has been transformed into one of the MCU's best characters with a bright future over his recent appearances.

The rebirth of Thor began with Thor: Ragnarok, where writer/director Taika Waititi flipped the overly-serious tone of the character and leaned completely into Hemsworth's comedic talents. This was also where Thor's power levels increased substantially. When he then was put in the hands of the Russo brothers for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, they balanced the humor with Thor's history of loss. In doing so, he got a compelling arc and was the only original Avenger to receive direct set up for more adventures.

When “Thor: Love and Thunder” was revealed to fans at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con, director Taika Waititi confirmed that Natalie Portman, who played Thor’s love interest Jane Foster, would return to the franchise and wield the powerful hammer. In the Marvel comic books, Jane took a spin as a new female Thor when the the original hero became unworthy to hold the magical hammer and own the title.

Hemsworth also called the script even more fun than “Thor: Ragnarok,” his previous solo film that was more light-hearted than earlier films. “After reading the script, I can say that I am very excited. In this production, there will for sure be a lot of love and a lot of lightning,” he said. “I’m glad that after all that happened in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ I’m still part of the Marvel Universe and we can continue the story of Thor. Of course, I can’t reveal anything about the plot. But to satisfy your curiosity, I will say that reading the script, I had a lot more fun than on ‘Thor Ragnarok,’ and that shows something because that movie was brilliant.”

The actor has played the titular god in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the 2011 film Thor and has appeared in the role in a further six movies – in both the standalone Thor series and Avengers franchise – since. With Thor: Love And Thunder entering pre-production (filming will begin in early 2021), Hemsworth has spoken about his intention to continue as Thor in the future. “I am not going into any retirement period,” he told Elle Man. “Thor is way too young for that. He’s only 1,500 years old.”

The actor continued to say that Love And Thunder is “definitely no a film that I say goodbye to this brand – at least I hope so.” Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will also helm the upcoming movie and, in the same interview, Hemsworth teased what fans could expect the filmmaker to bring to the film. “For sure there will be a lot of love and a lot of lightning in this production,” he said.

Meanwhile, another member of the Avengers recently ruled out a return to the MCU. Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man, responded to rumours that his character might make an appearance in the forthcoming Black Widow, despite dying in Avengers: Endgame.

Hemsworth previously told Variety on “The Big Ticket” podcast that he wasn’t sure when he’d hang up his hammer and cape and exit the Marvel universe. “There will come a day. Whether it’s now or in the future, I don’t know…Who knows what the sort of future holds. I don’t know, there could be remakes, sequels, prequel — who knows?” he said. After being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, “Thor: Love and Thunder” is set to release on Feb. 11, 2022.

Another possibility for Hemsworth's MCU return could be Avengers 5. Outside of his solo movies and post-credits scenes, the Avengers franchise is the only other one that Thor has appeared in. While most of his co-stars had roles in other MCU franchises, Hemsworth has only stuck to solo films or the big team-ups. This has also meant that he's flipped back and forth between a solo movie and a new Avengers film throughout his MCU run. If this pattern is going to continue, then Avengers 5 would be a natural place for him to land after Thor: Love and Thunder.
