Will Guardians of the Galaxy appear in Thor: Love and Thunder

The Guardians of the Galaxy will be in the fourth Thor movie, Vin Diesel has confirmed. He also said there won't be a baby or teenage Groot in the upcoming Guardians Volume III movie, but an "Alpha Groot" -- but didn't specify which version of the character will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.
During the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Thor Odinson met the Guardians of the Galaxy and quickly established a fun rapport with them, particularly Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Avengers: Endgame ended with the God of Thunder leaving Earth with the Guardians, and according to Vin Diesel, a.k.a. the voice of Groot, some of the Guardians will show up in Thor: Love and Thunder.

"The director talked to me about Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy," Diesel told CNET sister site Comicbook.com Monday. "That'll be very interesting, nobody knows, maybe I shouldn't have said anything." We last saw Thor taking off with Star Lord, Rocket, Groot, Drax and the other guardians at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Vin Diesel delivered the following comments while promoting his new movie Bloodshot to Comicbook.com. Although we already knew that familiar faces like Jane Foster, Valkyrie and Korg would be back for Thor: Love and Thunder, this is the first mention of the Guardians of the Galaxy showing up in the God of Thunder’s fourth movie. However, considering how the Marvel Cinematic Universe slate has changed in the last several years, it does make sense for the Guardians to have a presence in it.

Originally the plan was for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to come out in 2020, but due to James Gunn being fired and then rehired onto the threequel in the span of eight months, along with Gunn agreeing to write and direct The Suicide Squad during that interim period, that required the project to be pushed back. So now Gunn will work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 once he’s finished with The Suicide Squad, while Thor: Love and Thunder is set to wrap up Phase 4 in late 2021.

Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie and the new king of Asgard following the events of Endgame, said she's read the script and there've been "lots of excited text messages" between her and Lady Thor, Natalie Portman. Thor: Love and Thunder is being directed by Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi's Korg character will also be back for the new movie. It'll have two Thors, played by Chris Hemsworth and Portman. The release date is set for Nov. 5, 2021. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is still in the works, but its release date is unknown. The Guardians have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Had Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stayed in its original slot, one would imagine there was a strong chance of Thor taking part in the movie since he was hanging out with them again. Now with Thor: Love and Thunder coming out and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being delayed, it makes sense that some Guardians would appear there instead in order to tie back to where we left off with them and Thor in Avengers: Endgame.

Now, the MCU is preparing for a new wave of films, which will introduce new characters such as the Eternals and Shang-Chi, and continue the stories of other heroes, as is the case of Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Thor, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. The return of the God of Thunder came as a big surprise to Marvel fans, as he’s the first Avenger (and MCU character, in general) to get four solo films, and it has a lot to thank Thor: Ragnarok for. Titled Thor: Love and Thunder, the film will have Taika Waititi back as director as well as Chris Hemsworth as the Asgardian hero, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster/Lady Thor.

Thor 4 will focus on Jane’s journey and her taking on the mantle of Thor, as she did in the comics, and will count with Christian Bale as the new villain. Given Thor’s new bond with the Guardians of the Galaxy, which began in Avengers: Infinity War and continued in Endgame, many fans have been wondering if there could be a collaboration between these heroes in the upcoming Thor 4, and it now looks like a big possibility. While promoting his new film, Bloodshot, Vin Diesel revealed that Waititi has talked to him about Thor 4 incorporating some of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and before the mythical Marvel snipers get him, here’s what their role in Thor: Love and Thunder could be.

This means we can expect to see the Guardians in addition to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Natalie Portman’s returning Jane Foster as the new Thor. We also know that Christian Bale plays the film’s villain, although his exact character hasn’t been confirmed yet. Most likely, the Guardians’ role will be a small one, as James Gunn is still planning to return, after he finishes The Suicide Squad, for a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and presumably the team’s major developments will take place there. Still, the banter between Thor and the team was a highlight throughout Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Even a little more of that would be welcome. Thor: Love and Thunder is due in theaters on November 5, 2021. Bloodshot opens in theaters this Friday. Read More: The Guardians of the Galaxy Will Appear in ‘Thor 4’

Nebula and Rocket joined Thor and the rest of the surviving heroes in Avengers: Endgame on their mission to find Thanos, get the Stones, and reverse the snap. Sadly, Thanos had already destroyed the Stones to prevent further use, and Thor ended up decapitating him. By the end of the film, and once Thanos and his armies were gone for good, Thor left with the Guardians of the Galaxy, saying that they are now the “Asgardians of the Galaxy” and jokingly arguing with Star-Lord over command of the team. While there are five films coming out before Thor: Love and Thunder, one of them a prequel (Black Widow), there are none which could explore or show what Thor and the Guardians have been up to, so it’s very possible that Thor 4 will open with the God of Thunder traveling with his new friends.

“Thor will also... the director [Taika Waititi] talked to me about how Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy,” Diesel told the media outlet before adding: “Which'll be very interesting, nobody knows, but maybe I shouldn't have said anything."

The last time we saw the Guardians and the God of Thunder was at the end of Avengers: Endgame, when Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill were arguing over — then agreeing upon — who would be in charge of the Milano. So we kind of suspected that fans would see the gang still all together. This is now the first time our collective suspicions have been confirmed.

However, while talking about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with ComicBook.com, Diesel said: “I am waiting and excited for my friend James Gunn to knock this next one out of the park. He took The Suicide Squad so he's about to embark on it,” adding that for the third Guardians film, fans can expect to see “Alpha Groot,” whatever that means.
