The original Avatar took over the world with its amazing performance capture, CG backgrounds, and 3D photography. James Cameron's bewitching tale became the highest grossing film of all time when it released in 2009, until Avengers: Endgame came along. And since success tends to lead to sequels, there will be an Avatar 2, and more adventures on top of that in the ensuing years.
Originally slated for 2014, the as-yet-untitled Avatar 2 is the first of four sequels in the works. We're heading back to Pandora, where the indigenous Na'vi people fought off the human invaders ravaging their beautiful lands to mine precious "unobtainium". However, we also know we'll be travelling underwater for Avatar 2.

The "Avatar" sequels are starting to sound like fabled legends at this point. On Thursday, director James Cameron confirmed the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster has been delayed once again in a letter to fans on social media. The sequel is currently set for December 16, 2022. Most recently, it was scheduled for a December 2021 theatrical release.
"As many of you are aware, due to COVID-19, we were forced into an unexpected lengthy delay in starting the live action filming we are currently doing in New Zealand," wrote Cameron.
"What most of you likely do not know is that the pandemic is still preventing us from being allowed to recommence most of our virtual production work on stages in Los Angeles," he continued, saying that everything was on track for the prior release date before the coronavirus. "There is no one more disappointed about this delay than me."
The sequel to the former highest-grossing movie of all time has been delayed several times over the past decade. Two sequels were initially planned to be released back-to-back in 2014 and 2015. Then two sequels became four. In April 2016, Cameron announced the sequels were filming simultaneously to be released in December 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023. The films began production in 2017 and shifted dates once again. After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, those dates became December 2021, 2023, 2025, and 2027.
Avatar 2 has been delayed from December 17, 2021 to December 16, 2022 over productions issues related to coronavirus. Avatar 3 has been delayed from December 22, 2023 to December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 has been pushed back from December 19, 2025 to December 18, 2026, and finally Avatar 5 has been delayed from December 27, 2027 to December 22, 2028. When it's all done, that'll be 19 years after the release of the original Avatar.
