The film opens with aerial shots establishing the setting, a working-class neighborhood of New York City. The Jets, a local white street gang headed by Riff (played by Russ Tamblyn), are out enjoying the day. When they encounter members of the Puerto Rican street gang the Sharks, led by Bernardo (George Chakiris), a fight breaks out and is quickly broken up by police lieutenant Schrank (Simon Oakland) and Officer Krupke (William Bramley).
West side story gangs names
We didn’t get 17 shirtless selfies from Ansel Elgort to preface this announcement, but this morning we did get what is either a first look at Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story or an advertorial for Everlane’s next line of khaki clothing. Spielberg’s long-in-the-works remake of the classic Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Robbins movie musical stars Ansel Elgort and newcomer power-belter Rachel Zegler as the star-crossed Tony and Maria. In the photo above, we see the two of them, flanked by rival, well-manicured gangs of Jets and Sharks. From left to right, there are Jets members Anybodys (Ezra Menas), Mouthpiece (Ben Cook), Action (Sean Harrison Jones); Jets leader Riff (Mike Faist); Baby John (Patrick Higgins); Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler); Maria’s brother and Sharks leader Bernardo (David Alvarez); and Sharks members Quique (Julius Anthony Rubio), Chago (Ricardo Zayas), Chino (Josh Andrés Rivera), Braulio (Sebastian Serra), and Pipo (Carlos Sánchez Falú).At the dance in the local gym, the West side story gangs group is divided: Jets and their girls on one side and Sharks and their girls on the othe. Riff and his lieutenants move to challenge Bernardo and his lieutenants, but they are interrupted by Glad Hand, the chaperone who is overseeing the dance, and Officer Krupke. The two initiate some dances to get the kids to dance together, across the gang lines. In the promenade leading up to the dance, though, the girls and boys end up facing each other at random, Jet girls across from Shark boys and vice versa. Bernardo reaches across the Jet girl in front of him to take Anita's hand, and Riff does the same with his girlfriend, Velma. Everyone dances with their own group as Tony enters ("Mambo"). During the dance, Maria and Tony spot each other. There is an instant connection. Bernardo interrupts them, telling Tony to stay away from his sister and asking Chino to take her home. Riff and Bernardo agree to meet at Doc's in half an hour for the war council. As everyone else disappears, Tony is overcome with the feeling of having met the most beautiful girl ever ("Maria").
The following day, Tony arrives at the bridal shop at the end of the work day to see Maria. Anita agrees to keep their tryst a secret. Maria insists that Tony stop the planned fight from taking place. He arrives just as the fight—which is to be between Bernardo for the Sharks and Ice (Tucker Smith) for the Jets—is about to begin and argues for peace. The Sharks begin taunting Tony, and Riff attacks Bernardo in Tony’s defense. Bernardo stabs Riff to death, and Tony then grabs Riff’s knife and kills Bernardo. When sirens are heard in the distance, all the gang members scatter. Maria is awaiting Tony’s arrival at her home when the Shark Chino (Jose De Vega) arrives and tells her that Tony has killed her brother. Chino leaves, and Tony arrives. He explains what happened, and Maria forgives him. The tomboy Anybodys (Susan Oakes) informs the Jets that Chino is looking for Tony and has a gun. The Jets begin looking for Tony to warn him. Tony and Maria spend the night together and agree to meet at the bus station the following day to escape. Anita arrives after Tony’s departure. After Maria convinces her of her genuine love for Tony, Lieutenant Schrank arrives to question Maria. Anita agrees to let Tony (who is hiding in Doc’s store) know that Maria will be late meeting him.
The Jets, Sharks and Doc appear on the street. Maria picks up the gun and points it all of them, asking Chino if there are enough bullets to kill all of them and herself, as well. The depths of her sadness and anger move everyone as she breaks down over Tony's body. Officers Krupke and Schrank arrive. They stand with Doc, watching as two boys from each gang pick up Tony's body and form a processional. The rest follow the processional, with Baby John picking up Maria's shawl, giving it to her and helping her up. As Maria follows the others, the adults continue to bear silent witness ("Finale").
